My Role: Research, Script Writing, Recording, Video Editing
This is a video essay done for a class assignment that asked to discuss what the given game says or said about the current or past social, cultural, economic, and/or political status of the world. I chose to make a video about Tetris as its an evergreen game, that consistently remains relevant. This video specifically discuss what Tetris intitally revealed about the culture it was created in, and what one of the recent renditions now says about modern society and culture.
PROCCESS
After selecting Tetris as the game to study, I decided I would look at what the original Tetris revealed about the soviet game industry it was made. I then decided to look at a modern version of the game, Tetris Effect, and studyu what it tells us about the modern game industry and how games can be reinvented for new audiences. In order to get a better understanding of these games, I went through dozens of articles, documentarys and even talks given by the developers themselves and recording the information down in a document.
While researching I saved all the sources to a different doc and then used that research to create a few drafts for a script with a strong thesis while making to sure to include cues for how the script would work in a video.
After going through several drafts, I completed a final version to read off of. When there was a line that was difficult to read, I made sure to highlight it, so I would be able to pay special attention to it when recording. To record all the audio, I used a USB mic with Audacity as the recording software. This enabled me to apply several effects to make sure the audio sounded more clear and also cut out extraneous parts.
After finishing all the recordings I moved onto finding and making assets for the video. I used a combination of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and even Google docs to maek various things to show throughout the video.
While creating assets, I also started the editing process utlizing Adobe Premiere Pro. Through Premiere, I was able to layer audio effects, music, my recordings, with visual components, that includeed the assets I found and created with more effects layered on top of them. Rather than having an image just appear, I instead chose to have it fade in similar to a manual slideshow machine, with a click layered in. This allowed for me to bring a sense of tangibility and more immersion into the video.
